Attention to sleep-related breathing disorders has increased due to growing public awareness, a better understanding by the medical and dental communities on the role dentists may play in identifying and treating these disorders, and the recent statement by the ADA urging doctors to actively screen and appropriately treat or refer patients who suffer from them…

However, these developments are less than two years old.

For doctors like myself who have been treating patients for a decade or more, the path to helping them has not been easy. From having to educate our physician peers to educating the patient, and to battling with medical insurance companies, delivering treatment for these patients has been an uphill battle…

Methods of treatment are now available for patients who need orthodontic clear aligner treatment and have also been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and request sleep oral appliance therapy. This can be accomplished most efficiently by correcting malocclusions using clear aligners with the use of high-frequency vibration throughout active and retention phase treatment, while at the same time treating the patient’s obstructive sleep apnea with an oral sleep appliance that fits over the clear aligners. Distracted Driving Laws Still Have a Way to Go

Sleep-deprived drivers pose similar risks on the road as drivers distracted by smartphones, but most state’s laws don’t reflect this danger, argues a dental sleep medicine practitioner.

So far, 47 states have passed laws that ban texting while driving, and many have taken this concept a step further, explicitly banning drivers from using handheld devices. Georgia is the latest state to follow suit. The “Hands-Free Georgia Act,” which went into effect on July 1, comes with many nuances, but in general motorists will be prohibited from holding a cell phone or other electronic device while behind the wheel…
